our herd
As you might imagine, one of the most fun features at Your Alpaca Cottage (formerly the Decatur Alpaca Cottage) is a herd of adopted and rescued Alpacas & Llamas! They are gentle and curious creatures, each with unique personalities.
Mr. Bingley
Mr. Bingley is the youngest member adopted into our herd. He’s a Huarizo which means he is BOTH Alpaca and Llama! Crazy, huh? His Mama is a Llama and his Dad was an ambitious Alpaca, so to speak! Bings, as I call him, is intelligent, super sweet, curious, and has become an integral part of the the herd here at Your Alpaca Cottage!
Zeke
Zeke is part of the original four herd members here at Your Alpaca Cottage. He’s a Huacaya Alpaca so has the poofy Alpaca fiber most often seen. He is one of the oldest members of our herd and the last surviving member of the herd of older male Alpacas we originally adopted. Zeke is super chill and very easy to work with ~ he also resembles Falkor, the luck dragon from the movie The Neverending Story, which is fitting because both Zeke and we are very lucky to have him here at Your Alpaca Cottage!
Loverboy
Loverboy is another Suri Alpaca and our herd’s social butterfly! When our Airbnb guests arrive, he is *always* the first to greet them at the field gate. He’s not alpha, just extra and friendly that way ~ usually hoping our guests have carrots for him! But don’t worry, I always put a bag of carrot treats in the cottage refrigerator so Loverboy never has to go without!
Skyboy Blue
Skyboy Blue is a Huacaya Alpaca and had a rough start in life. At a year old, he was injured by a donkey at his original rescue farm and almost didn’t survive! Thankfully he did and he’s since become an important part of the Your Alpaca Cottage herd! Skyboy Blue and Zeke are good friends and are often seen together hanging out in the Alpaca barn.
Dallas
It’s hard to talk about Dallas without laughing a bit! Dallas is a Suri Alpaca and has gorgeous, silky Suri fiber! As gorgeous as his fiber is, Dallas usually has a major ‘hay head’ and looks a bit disheveled most of the time. He and Loverboy are besties and have lived together their whole lives and we plan to keep it that way here in their forever home!
Neville
Neville was originally a 4-H animal, spent time at several farms after, and then was dumped with a herd of cows for about 3 years. During that time, he had no handling, vaccines, feed other than what was available for grazing in the field, and no shearing (which can be really dangerous in hot Georgia summers!) He came to the attention of Southeast Llama Rescue and was lovingly cared for as a foster with Tracy & Liam at Wits End Llamas before he came to Your Alpaca Cottage in his continued foster journey as we worked together to find his forever home. UPDATE: Neville has recently moved to his permanent right here in Georgia! We love him and were so glad to have given him a safe place during his time with us.
our flock
Our colorful flock of happy, free-range chickens is also a delight to watch! Each breed was selected for a particular feature. Our Silver Laced Wyandottes have gorgeous feathers. The Ameraucana and Easter Egger hens lay lovely blue and green eggs. When combined with the sky blue of our Crested Cream Legbar eggs and the dark chocolate brown of our Black Copper Maran eggs, it makes for a kaleidoscopic egg basket!
Each chicken is special and, believe it or not, has a name! Among our current favorites are Emily Chickenson, George Peckhard, Audrey Henburn, and our Red Cochin, Rioja (I might have been drinking wine when we named her!) They lay delicious farm fresh, organic eggs and if the flock is laying, we are happy to share with our Airbnb guests!
